Can Chair Yoga Help You Lose Weight? An Honest Answer for Over-60s

Can chair yoga help you lose weight? An honest look at what seated exercise can and can't do for weight after 60, and what actually helps.

Many ads promise that a few weeks of chair yoga will melt away weight. We'd rather be honest: chair yoga on its own is not an effective way to lose weight. But that doesn't mean it can't help.

The short answer

Gentle chair yoga burns relatively few calories. Weight loss mainly comes from eating patterns and your total activity across the day. What chair yoga can do is help you start moving, keep your muscles working and build a daily habit, which makes the rest easier.

Where chair exercise does help

  • Keeping muscle. We naturally lose muscle as we age, and muscle helps you stay strong and independent. Seated strength moves, like leg extensions and heel raises, help keep it.
  • Moving more. Feeling looser and less stiff often makes it easier to walk more and sit less, and that adds up.
  • Consistency. A 10-minute routine you actually do every day beats an intense workout you dread.
  • Feeling better. Many people find slow movement and breathing improve mood and sleep, which also affect eating habits.

A realistic plan

  1. Walk (or do another moderate activity) on most days. The CDC suggests about 150 minutes a week for older adults.
  2. Strengthen twice a week. Try our seated leg exercises.
  3. Stretch and move daily with a short chair yoga session.
  4. Talk to your doctor about eating habits and goals that are right for you.

A more active seated routine

If you want to get your heart rate up a little, these moves are the most active ones in chair yoga:

Seated Marching, seated chair yoga exercise

Seated Marching

12 reps

  1. Sit tall and hold the sides of the seat.
  2. Lift your left knee, then set the foot down.
  3. Lift your right knee, then set it down.
  4. Keep marching at a steady pace, sitting tall.

Easier: Lift the knees just a little, or only lift the heels.

Leg Extensions, seated chair yoga exercise

Leg Extensions

8 reps

  1. Sit tall and hold the sides of the seat.
  2. Breathe out as you straighten your left leg out in front of you.
  3. Breathe in as you lower your foot back to the floor.
  4. Repeat with the right leg, and keep alternating.

Easier: Straighten the leg only partway, or slide the foot forward along the floor.

Heel and Toe Raises, seated chair yoga exercise

Heel and Toe Raises

10 reps

  1. Sit tall with your feet flat under your knees.
  2. Lift your heels up high, then lower them.
  3. Lift your toes, keeping your heels down, then lower them.
  4. Keep going at a steady rhythm.

Easier: Smaller lifts, or heels only.

The bottom line

Chair yoga won't melt away weight, and anyone promising that is overselling it. But it's a safe, enjoyable way to keep your body moving and strong, and that's worth a lot at any age.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lose belly fat with chair exercises?

No exercise burns fat from one specific area. Chair exercises can strengthen the core and help you move more, but losing belly fat depends on overall calorie balance, mainly diet and total daily activity.

How many calories does chair yoga burn?

Gentle chair yoga burns relatively few calories, roughly similar to light housework. More active seated exercise like brisk marching burns a little more.

What is the best exercise for weight loss after 60?

A mix works best: regular walking or other moderate activity, strength exercises twice a week to keep muscle, and eating habits that suit you. Talk to your doctor before major changes.
